Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pump

A ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground outside using plastic pipes which can either but dug into the ground by trench if you have enough land or by bore hole if the ground is suitable for digging down deep.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps are just like air conditioning. A silent-running fan draws in the outside air, and this heat is transferred to the heat pumps refridgeration circuit. The heat pump converts this into hot water, which heats your house and domestic hot water. A heat pump is an energy efficient way to cool your home in summer and heat it in the winter.

Heat pumps use electricity to run, typically you only need one unit of electricity to deliver two to three units of heat with a heat pump, heat pumps operate best in highly insulated homes and with a low temperature distributed system such as underfloor heating or large radiators. This is because the water circulates at a lower temperature through the pipes than a conventional heating system (typically 30 degrees rater than 50 degrees) therefore more surface area is needed to deliver the same amount of heat to the home.

There will be financial benefits from the Renewable Heat Incentive from installing Heat pumps, this is expected to be launched within the year. More information can be seen on this web page: http://www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/meeting_energy/Renewable_ener/incentive/incentive.aspx

Advantages of heat pumps:
• Energy efficient
• Low noise levels and no compressor noise
• Individual control for heating and cooling

Environmental benefits:
• Reduces CO2

Financial benefits:
• Can save money on heating bills
