Our Top Ten Energy Saving Tips
…small, simple things which will make a big difference in your home and your pocket!
1. Don't put furniture in front of a radiator.
This will block the heat and won't give it the chance to circulate around the room.
2. When boiling the kettle, only use enough water for what you need at the time.
It is common sense really, there's no point using up more electrical energy than necessary.
3. Use a shower instead of a bath, where possible.
A 5-10 minute shower only uses a third of the water used to fill a bath!
4. Make sure all dripping taps are turned off.
A dripping tap wastes enough hot water in one week to fill half a bath!
5. Close your curtains in the early evening.
10% of your home's heat is lost through the windows. By carrying out this simple tip is preventing heat escaping.
6. Set your thermostats correctly.
(Your thermostat should be set to 18°c-21°c. For babies, elderly and severely disabled people - you're recommended to set your thermostat up to 23°c. Check your hot water cylinder is at set at around 60°c and that you only keep your hot water on for the hours you need it.)
Save yourself some money! Did you know by reducing your room temperature by 1°c could cut your fuel bill by 10%?
7. When replacing electrical appliances, make sure you choose the highest energy rated model (A or A+).
These electrical appliances could be washing machines, freezers, fridges and so on…
By choosing the highest energy rated model will save you money over time.

8. Don't leave lights on in empty rooms.
It is common sense, this wastes electricity! Another tip - try using low energy light bulbs! They last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs and use only 20% of the electricity.
9. Cook with the lid on your pan. Also, match the lid to the pan size.
I know, this one sounds random but keeping the heat in the pan means you can reduce the heat and still cook the food. Over time this could save you money and reduces condensation in your kitchen. Put a lid on it!
10. Don't leave your TV on standby, turn it off!
This goes for all electrical appliances, such as computers, radios etc. not just televisions! Did you know leaving your appliances on standby uses the same energy as having them switched on? Turn them off at the wall.
